Second hand or brand new stair lifts?

A brand new stair lift is costly but buying a second hand unit could prove to be more costly to you in the long run or in some points too. If really lucky one could be able to get a good second hand unit by doing research properly. Here are some few guidelines that can make you decide if you would rather buy a second hand or a brand new one.

Advantages of Buying a New Stair Lift:
• Warranty is given if you buy a new stair lift from the approved dealer.
• When a part is destroyed, it is still easy to find a new part. You would no longer need to go to the garbage dump, in hopes of finding the part you need.
• A new stair lift is more likely for curved stairs because it is customized
• Since it is new, there are now added features that older models might not have.

Disadvantages of Buying a New Stair Lift:
• Definitely will put a dent in your wallet when you buy a new stair lift compared to getting a second hand unit.
• A new model may still have other kinks that haven’t been work out properly yet. It may say in the button quick stop, but when you press it may just run faster and you’ll be catapulted to the neighbor’s yard.
• A new curved lift will take 3 – 10 weeks to be installed.
• A new curved stair lift will need more service in the long run than straight stair lifts.

Advantages of used stair lifts:
• Cheaper by $300- $1500
• A good quality stair lift brand even if 2nd hand will not necessarily give you more problems than a brand new one.

Disadvantages of used stair lifts:
• Less warranty
• If you have a curved stair, it is harder for you to find a 2nd hand stair lift. As there are few stair cases that have an exact curves and dents.
• Harder to find parts.
• Might need to service it more.
• Since the model may be already obsolete, local dealer may not be able to help you out when problems occur.
• Since it is used, it might give you a hard time to be the perfect match for your weight, height, length of track and the side of the stairs.

Finding a second hand stair lift depends also on the population on your area. If the population in your area has very few old people or handicapped, it will be hard for you to look for 2nd hand stair lifts. It is also obvious that a place that is considered to be more of an uptown metropolis center has got more technology for people.

It really depends on the person if he or she opts to choose a brand new one or a 2nd hand one. What’s really important is that he or she tries to research and canvass whether brand new or 2nd hand so to find out what would be the best one to help him or her out.
