How Stairlifts can Provide STAIR to People with Disability
There are a wide variety of mobility solutions in the market today. However, one cost-efficient solution paves the way to revolutionize the lives of those that are physically challenged — the stairlifts, a special mobility aid that helps those who have a disability go up and down the stairs with ease.
According to historians, a king in early 1500s had already used an aid similar to the stairlift due to a bad accident in banter. It might be called a “stairthrone” at that time, but the concept is still the same – a chair that can climb stairs to help the ailing king. “To help” was also the reason why an inventor created the same machine for the same purpose in 1920s. It was created as a chair that can assist someone with disability go up and down the stairs. However, it is in the 1930s that the most companies in America started to produce stairlifts commercially and began selling and advertising it to their target market, the people victimized by polio.
You can see thru history that the persons behind the birth of stairlifts really cared and wanted comfort and ease to the lives of the people that matters to them. They wouldn’t go to great lengths of inventing a stairlift if they have not seen the positive effects it can do to those with a disability.
Hereunder are some of positive effects to the physically challenged when you have stairlifts at home. Just remember the word S-T-A-I-R.
S – SAFETY. It is a known fact that most fatal fall-related injuries in our homes happen in the stairs. With the advent of stairlifts, this risk of falling was reduced. Most stairlifts are designed with safety in mind. Stairlifts come with seat belts and other safety restraints already available. Some comes with obstruction sensors that stop the lift if something is blocking its path. Others got a swivel seal lock to hold the chair in place when a person with a disability get on or off and most got constant pressure controls that will stop if one releases the controls. With these features, you are assured that when using the stairs, your loved one with a disability is safe even if you are not always on their side.
T – TIME. Stairlifts give those with a disability reasons to enjoy their time at home. They unlikely will have to spend more time in doing the dreaded task of going up and down the stairs since stairlifts can help them do the task in a faster time and less muscular pain. Aside from that, there is a reduced wear and tear of their knees, ankles and hip joints when using this aid. This saves joint use for activities they love to do. With stairlifts, people with a disability can have a bigger working space and more quality time to be productive.
A – ASSISTANCE. You can’t always be there for people with disability. However, there is that peace of mind knowing that there is a special mobility aid that your loved one can use.
I – INDEPENDENCE. Persons with physical limitations most likely can live on their own because stairlifts provide accessibility. With the help of stairlifts, they don’t need to disturb others to help them up and down the stairs. Doing simple task without asking for assistance can help them bring back their confidence and self-worth. It teaches them to become independent even with some physical limitations.
R – RELIEF. Convenience and comfort are benefits that people with a disability can get from using stairlifts. Convenience as they don’t have to manually climb the stairs and comfort as they will just sit on a chair as they are carried up the stairs. What a relief not just for the handicap but for those who are caring for them.
To people with a disability, we wanted to give our support and always show them how much we care. We understand their sensitivities, forgive their emotional breakdowns and most often than not, give in to their whims.
