What is a stairlift? A stairlift is a mechanical device for lifting disabled people and sometimes even their wheelchair up and down stairs. For some people who actually have sufficiently wide enough stairs, a rail is mounted to the treads of the stairs. A chair or lifting platform is attached to the rail. That is why it is often called as chair lift. A person on the chair or platform is lifted as the chair or platform moves along the rail.
 
Most stairlifts and/or chair lift are now run on DC power. This reduces the potential for any hazard since they do not have any trailing wires. Every time the stairlift has been used, the batteries are recharged. The stairlift remains operational in case of a power shortage, since it is battery operated.
 
The cost of a chair lift on the other hand is manageable for most people. It really depends on the quality of the stairlift and some other devices that are attached into it. As to its running cost, modern stairlifts uses only a very low voltage that can be compared to that of an electric kettle.

Stairlifts are also known variously by other names and we can often call it as chair lift. This type of chair lift should not be confused with the chair lift used by skiers up in the mountains. Some of the first so called chair lifts produced commercially were advertised and sold in the USA in the 1930s. A lot of the users at the time were sufferers of polio. Now of course, there’s more than anything that the chair lift is used for.

Choosing the right stairlift for either yourself or your loved ones can be such a daunting task. For most people who lost the ability to move around on their own whether it be in their own place, or outside as well, coming to terms with the reality can be hard for them.
